What is bottled water?
Water is classified as "bottled water" or "drinking water" if it meets all state standards, is sealed in a sanitary container and sold for human consumption. Some bottled water includes carbonation, which can occur naturally in the water or be added by the bottler. Flavors, extracts and essences - derived from spice or fruit - can be added to bottled water, but these additions must comprise less than one percent by weight of the final product. Bottled water cannot contain sweeteners or additives (other than flavors, extracts or essences) and must be calorie-free and sugar-free. In addition, most bottled waters are sodium-free or include "very low" amounts of sodium.

How much water should I drink everyday?
It depends on your body weight and daily activity level. A general rule of thumb is to drink at least eight glasses of water a day (1 glass = 250 ml, 8 glasses = 2000 ml or 2 litres). But the more active you are, the more water your body needs. You can calculate your daily water needs here.

How do I know my bottled water is safe?
You can trust that a particular brand of bottled water is safe by knowing if it meets the necessary quality standards. For example, Aquafina meets stringent standards set by World Health Organization (WHO) and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). You must also consider factors like the purification process, the bottling/sealing technology employed and even the delivery process.

What is the shelf life of bottled water?
Bottled water should have an indefinite shelf life when made under good manufacturing practices and quality standards. It should be stored in unopened, properly sealed, container. No expiration date is required. Long-term storage may produce off-odors and flavors.

What is the proper way to store bottled water?
Bottled water should be stored in a cool (i.e. room temperature), dry environment, away from chemicals such as household cleaning products and away from solvents such as gasoline, paint thinners and other toxic materials.

Are plastic containers for bottled water regulated?
The plastic materials for bottles are regulated by the FDA as food contact substances. These substances must be approved under FDA's food additive regulations.

Does bottled water contain chlorine?
No. Bottlers do not use chlorine as a final disinfecting agent in bottled water. Bottlers use ozone (O3) - a form of oxygen, or ultraviolet light. Unlike chlorine, which is commonly used in public water supplies, these methods disinfect water without leaving any after-taste or smell.

Why is bottled water preferred over tap water?
People prefer bottled water for its quality. It does not contain calories, caffeine or alcohol. Unlike tap water, which uses chlorine as a final disinfectant, bottled water is most commonly disinfected with ozone, which does not leave a residual taste.
